Orton Gillingham Multi-Sensory Reading is the umbrella program from which similar programs such as Wilson are based. OG instruction is a direct, structured and systematic approach to reading, spelling and writing. It is diagnostic teaching. In other words, as instruction is given, errors are noted so that when the next lesson is prepared, those errors are addressed and corrected. Each lesson is designed to meet the individual needs of the student.
OG lessons are quite structured, so students with attention issues benefit by knowing what to expect. In addition, each lesson includes activities to address auditory processing weaknesses that commonly occur with dyslexia.
Lessons typically last 1 hour and 15 minutes depending on the age and attention span of the student.
